Held in place by reinforced levees, the swollen Red River snakes through Fargo, North Dakota, and Moorhead, Minnesota, in this image, captured by the Advanced Land Imager on the EO-1 satellite on March 28, 2009. The river’s usual s-shaped curves north and south of Interstate 94 have been swallowed in a bulge of water. The main channel of the river is slightly darker than the flooded land in these areas, hinting at how extensive the floods are.

On the east side of the river, residents of Moorhead immediately north and south of the Interstate had evacuated by March 28. Some residents in Fargo near the top of the s-bend were also evacuated. In this region, the river is encroaching on the tiny, neat squares indicative of urban neighborhoods.

U.S. Highway 10 frames the top of the image. The road crosses the Red River, the southernmost of the cluster of bridges shown. All of the bridges were closed, according to the city of Moorhead. The bridges clearly had not seen traffic or a snowplow since the most recent snowstorm, since a strip of white covers the bridges. The bridge immediately above U.S. Highway 10 (probably a rail bridge) may be flooded. A small section of the bridge is the same dark blue color as the water.

The Red River reached a record high of 40.82 feet in this region on March 28, when this image was taken. By March 30, water levels had started to recede. Flood stage for the river is 18 feet, says the National Weather Service. A wider view of the Red River basin on March 28 shows significant flooding north and south of Fargo and Moorhead.

Snow fall in Inches for the Valley today

Just thought I would share how successful my diet is going this week...and my thoughts as I stepped outside into the beautiful weather we are having....

If I were a little more crazy I would fear myself a safety hazard to others & go on a shooting spree…I honestly don’t know WHY I do this to myself…I am exhausted, over eating, not exercising and CRABBY!

PS: Add sick of this flood, snow & wind on top of all of that…who knows what I am capable of. I honestly almost cried when I saw all the snow today…take a deep breath & exhale, this too shall pass! If you're here looking for a positive personality...look elsewhere...today I am holding a grudge.

If you can't take the heat...

Last week in the heat of the battle I decided to ship out my little baby evacuee and send her to stay w/ some family in Fergus Falls. It is hard to make that decision if keeping her around would alleviate some stress or to get her out of the stress to have some fun.

I called my Aunt Cathy & Cousin Annie and they were all MORE THAN WILLING to take Olivia for a few days! I brought her down on Friday morning, and my aunt was so helpful meeting me in Rothsay to pick up my precious cargo. According to all in Fergus she was an angel. However I think they are teasing because as soon as I walked in the door to pick her up she cried & screamed at me for about an hour. LOL...just as kids will do!

Polar Bear Plunge

Here is a letter my Mom just sent out to family & friends. So well worded I thought I should share!

Hello family and friends,
I hope this finds everyone well & safe. Mark returned home Friday to help with the flood. It gave us some relief knowing he was back home. The boys and I returned last night from Ireland. Wow what a sight when we flew into Fargo, there was complete stillness & silence on the plane as everyone looked at the flood of Fargo Moorhead. It is a good feeling to be home, but not so good to see all the water and all the dirt dikes everywhere. Mark made an amazing welcome home meal "Shepherds Pie." It was my first dinner @ our waterfront property. ha. The Fargo Moorhead Flood was all over the International news in Ireland, we watched in disbelief. Ireland is a beautiful place to visit, hope to go back another time.

When we drove up to our neighborhood last night we had to park on higher ground and walk across yards to get to our home. Our home is fine. I wish I could say the same for my sister Becky's home, Corey's dads home and many others that are fighting this flood. You can't tell if we are moving in or moving out with all the furniture & stuff from the basement on the main floor. Brady's bed is set up in the living room, Ha. The Johnson B & B is back in business open to family & friends, just call. All schools & business's are closed in the area, except for business of necessity, no travel is advised until Wednesday.

Thank you to our family, friends & for all those from all around with all your help, concern & prayers for us & others in the area. The spirit of the people in Fargo Moorhead is an amazing thing. What a community of togetherness. This is what makes a community like ours worth fighting for. They are all in this flood fight together. The Snow has just started to fall & Sandbagging is still in need in the FM area. brrr. We are not out of the woods yet. High winds and another blizzard with up to 14" snow in the forecast. We continue to hope and pray for the best and safety for everyone. I'm thinking a Polar Bear Plunge could happen, if we only had a hot tub for the back yard. ha.

So I was checking in on some of the local news & came across an article telling people in North Fargo emergency evacuation precautions, etc should they become stranded...

And I would like to quote what one very dumb man from WY had to say about Fargo:

OK, so people are stranded and needing rescuing now so more people are gonna put their lives on the line and also are gonna spend tons of money to go get them when a little bit of planning on their parts would have them some place else. This kills me, every year the Red River floods (I would like to predict another flood next year just to get a head of the game here) and every year there is this mass panic to get sand baggers and every year people get stranded. When are people gonna wise up? Build a sea wall like they do along the Mississippi River in IA, IL and etc and when the water starts to rise, leave. So, once again, the city of Fargo looks to the feds (us) to come a running with our wallets out to fill sand bags and shell out cash for helicopters, trucks and etc so that Fargo can get rescued from a river that has been flooding since the city was build and will continue to do so. It is crazy, I think that if you live in a flood plain or build a city or building in a flood plain then you are buying a ticket for a ride that you alone should take. Same for people who build along the ocean where hurricanes hit and for people who build houses in forests and then don't clear cut back away from the house to protect it. Build it and when it burns up or washes away too bad.

Ron G, I hope the same courtesy is shown towards your family & friends in their hour of need. Comment on your own local paper, if you don't like what we have going on in Fargo, butt out. I’m not sure why you didn’t go on to say why fall in love if your heart could be broken? or Why keep creating people if they are just going to die…W-O-W Ron, is all I have to say about you.

So do we deserve to have our city taken over by this fierce river every few years because we can't get funding to fix our flooding problems & re-route the river (like in Winnipeg) or build bigger permanent dikes (some of which have been failing because of the severity of this flood)???

Errrrr!!! Just thought I would share.
